Telephone
I am planning on spending winter in Laos but need to be in regular contact with folks back home. Will my mobile phone be working in the cities and populated areas? And is the regular phone system easely avaiable, reliable and affordable?
I have experienced Burma being difficult in this regard and expect Laos to be better. More

Weather/flooding in Vientiane area?
Am currently in Bangkok now and making a visa run this weekend to Vientiane. Was just wondering if I need to be prepared for flooding, etc. in the area...with the storm and rain, etc...Thanks. More

Luang Prabang's Chantavinh Guest House
Anyone have current info about Chantavinh, across the river and about 10km(?) from LP. Previous guests wrote about difficulties with daily boat transport to LP. Telephone or e-mail number? Our family of 7 adults flying in from Chiang Mai 27Dec, out 31Dec. Want something picturesque away from main part of LP. Thanks, Uku  More

South Lao guide recommendation?
The best "off the tourist track" experiences often come from having a quality guide/translator. We have been extra-fortunate with treks out of Muang Long, Muang Khua, and in Lao Cai Province in Vietnam to have had guides that became, in a way, part of our family's lore (we have two teen boys). Attentive but authentic, decent enough with English skills and familiar enough with local ways to describe customs, lore, fruits and bugs (and translate some), helps get us involved in activities with locals, makes sure there is food enough, makes sure that the village is compensated appropriately, etc.

We are in Sekong, Salavan, and Bolevan Plateau area in a few short weeks. Does any person have a personal recommendation for a quality guide in this area?

Feel free to pm if it seems more appropriate.

Thanks, ya'll.  More

Laos visa on arrival 30 days

Lao border crossings to Vietnam
Has anyone got up to date info on the border crossing from the North-east of Lao into Vietnam? I'm planning to go overland to Dien Bien Phu, and have been told the border is now open.
Any news out there?

Direct bus from Savannaket/Pakse to Vang Vieng / LP?
Hi all, I'm trying to find out if there's any direct bus or good connections from Savannaket or Pakse to Vang Vieng or LP. I'd rather not fly.

I'm going Laos mainly for Si Phan Don and the Khmer temples in the south, and to make the boat trip up Nam Khan from LP. (Yes I know there's a lot of distance between those two points!) I've been to Vientiane and VV before, so they're not very important this time round. But if I had rather break my journey from southern Laos to LP, I'd rather stop at VV (despite the trashy scene) than Vientiane. Anywhere but Vietiane, which is dreadfully boring!

Thanks.

Luang Nam Tha to Muang Khua
Hello, anyone know if it's possible to get from Luang Nam Tha to Muang Khua in one go if I left Luang Nam Tha around 5PM-ish? Thanks

Lanes in Laos
Is the term "Soi" used in Laos to refer to side road lanes like it is in Thailand? Or do the have another term? I'm seeing many new street signs in Vientiane and the lanes have been numbered. But what should I call these side roads? The French paid for the new signs so the streets are titled Rue, Quay, etc. - fair enough I guess.

Border croosing from Cambodia to Southern Laos

Hi,

Can you tell me which would be the best/ easiest border crossing from Cambodia to get into Southern Laos. There seems to be conflicting information in the Lonely Planet guide. Can I get a Laos visa on that border crossing?
Many thanks for everyones' help.

booking of guesthouse in luang prabang

Hey all

I'll be going with a group of students from my school to LP arnd dec 13-17 to do some community work. i was wondering whether i can book about 12 double rooms for us around the us 10-15 a night range during that time. Of course if its just me going alone I would take a look and get a room on the spot. But for this I was wondering is there anybody who could link me up with a cheap and good guesthouse during that time.

Nigel

Volunteer Opportunities?
hi all, will be in Lao for a couple months and would like to know if there are any good places to volunteer in vientiane. don't need any room/board but also don't want to pay and "program fees" - or whatever. just would like a worthwhile place to do volunteer. any suggestions? thanks!

Cost of Malarone in Luang Prabang?
Has anyone bough malarone tablets in Luang Prabang. They want GBP2.50 per tablet in the UK (US$4!) so we reckoned it would be cheaper out there.

I don't want to get into the usual use / don't use argument, just want to know how much they cost in Laos.

Thank you very much.

River Mekong Boat Trip - Luang Prabang to Chiang Khong - Advice Needed

Hi Guys

I'm doing a round the world trip and as part of it plan to travel from Hong Kong to Singapore by land, not sure if that is a crazy plan or not but it seems to make sense from my research.

The plan so far would take me from Hong Kong through China splitting the journey perhaps in Guangzhou & Nanning then across Cambodia via Hanoi to Laos.

At this point i am hoping to get a boat up the River Mekong from Luang Prabang to Chiang Khong on the Thai border, i've been looking on the net and can't find much information.

I am familiar with Thailand and Malaysia so that would not be a problem but i just need some advice on this first stretch of the trip

a) Is Hong Kong to Thailand by land possible by bus, boat etc (no aircraft)
b) Does anyone know if the boat from Luang Prabang to Chiang Khong is possible
C) Anyone have any tips on anywhere to perhaps stop on the way
