Auberge Le Calao

A restored 1904-vintage Sino-Portuguese-style mansion near the beautiful Wat Xieng Thong, Auberge Le Calao has just six large rooms. Opt for upstairs as the four rooms up there have grand old arched verandas overlooking the Mekong river.

Originally built by a Chinese-Lao, the house was occupied by a French merchant from 1936 to 1968 and was one of the first joint-venture hotels to open its doors when Laos was rediscovered by the world in the early 1990s. The big and breezy rooms are quite simply furnished compared to other residences at this price, but the location makes up for it with some of the biggest Mekong views in town. There is no TV and no minibar, but the bed linen is beautiful and the bathrooms are almost regal. The gilded toilets look like they are fit for a king, although this is one residence never used by the Lao royal family. Breakfast downstairs is included, but you can't help thinking the hotel should be doing more to promote a restaurant that has such a sterling view of the river
