If you just love the look of those heritage hotels in the classic converted colonial buildings but just can't stretch the budget, try the Bounthieng Guesthouse. Set in a lovely whitewashed building on the riverfront, this is a little bit of class at a snip.

OK, so that's the building we are talking about. Admittedly, the class stops there, as the rest of the place is rather on the basic side. There are just seven rooms in this lovely little property and you should take advantage of them while you can, as no doubt someone will do a number on this place in a few years time and the rates will go through the roof. There are four rooms upstairs that include a big bed, local Lao lighting and hot water showers. Downstairs is less appealing, as only share bathrooms are available and the views over the river are less spectacular. If the interior feels a little disappointing compared with the classic exterior, head outside and soak up the beauty of those blue shutters. The river breeze will blow away your troubles in no time at all.
