Set in a large garden compound down a quiet backstreet, Khoun Savanh has some of the cheapest rooms in town. It may lack the character of the older properties around, but with populist prices like these it's hard to complain.

It's best to splash the cash and take the more expensive rooms, as these are considerably larger than the cheaper options and most include a clear view of the golden spire of Wat Phu Si on the hilltop. Rooms No 6-10 have the peachy views and No 10 is the real deal. Opposite this large, two-storey air-con block is a smaller, older building where the cheapies are housed. The fan rooms are a fair deal, as the bathrooms include hot water, but the rooms with shared facilities are pretty pokey. There are 10 air-con rooms in all and 10 fan rooms, but this place can fill up quickly when budget tour companies pass through. Bike rental is available here and there is a small restaurant for light breakfasts and snacks, including the essential BeerLao.
