Laos - Luang Prabang - Where to sleep - The Grand Luang Prabang

The Grand Luang Prabang

Set around the former villa of local hero Prince Regent Phetsarat, this 78-room resort features French-Indochina-inspired architecture spread over a large well-landscaped area with reflecting pools, lotus ponds and superb views of the Mekong.

The rooms are well-equipped to a four-star standard and include air-con, satellite TV and minibar. The furnishings are attractive but relatively spartan for such a grand place, and many of the rooms lack a bathtub, which means no relaxing soak at the end of long day. The grounds are stunning with tropical trees and plants in full bloom and the Mekong meandering its way past. The restaurant is set on the edge of the river and is a delightful place to enjoy breakfast or a romantic dinner. Since the hotel is about 4km (2.5mi) from town, a handy shuttle bus is provided to carry guests back and forth throughout the day.

Author Tip
The Mekong is an inspiring backdrop to this grand hotel. Take to the waters with a boat trip. Float downstream towards the pretty village of Ban Ou or charter a boat upstream to Luang Prabang and the magnificent Pak Ou Caves beyond, home to hundreds of beautiful Buddha images hidden away high above the river.
