Guesthouse
Vanvisa is a
small family-run guesthouse, a homestay really, that has a good
position just a short stroll from the massive Mekong river. There
are just six rooms set behind a shop that sells textiles, antiques
and handicrafts.
Thanks to its small size, the owners are able to maintain an
intimacy lacking in some of the bigger guesthouses around town and
you really are welcomed as one of the family, although that means
behaving respectfully by night and not staggering in drunk in the
early hours. The owner, a cultured Lao lady, sometimes makes
breakfasts and family-style dinners for guests and can even arrange
an informal cooking workshop for those that want to learn more about
Lao cuisine. There is a small garden out the front which begs to be
made into a little restaurant some time in the future. At the back
is a small dining area where family meals and the occasional guest
meal are taken.

Author Tip
Much of Vanvisa is filled with antiques and handicrafts - this might
inspire a trip to Thithpeng Maniphone. Thitpheng crafted silverware
for the royal family in Luang Prabang before the revolution in 1975
and he is still held in high esteem by the Thai royal family. He has
a large team of silversmiths, but still takes on the delicate work
himself.
