If it's a slice of riverfront action you're after, then this little guesthouse can deliver. The lobby may not look like much, but venture in and some of the best value riverfront rooms are your reward.

There are ten rooms tucked away at the back, all finished with an elegant wood trim. The rooms include twin beds, a fan, a small bathroom with hot water showers and some lacy linen. Room rates often rise during high season but this is understandable given the 'des res' location. Above the lobby is room 909 (don't ask how they came up with the numbering system, it really doesn't make any sense to us). This is the secret suite, which is bigger and better than all the rest, but it doesn't come cheap. There may be better riverfront deals than the suite, but for those looking for a cheaper room near the Mekong, this place has to be a contender.

Author Tip
Wander along the Mekong riverfront and lap up Lao life as it passes by. Check out the morning market, which draws villagers from all around town to try and sell their produce. Later in the day, pull up a chair at one of the many riverside diners for a sunset drink over the Mekong. Don't forget dinner, as many of these places have excellent and inexpensive Lao food.
