Close to Wat Xieng Mouane and a short stroll from the Mekong River, this white two-storey French colonial mansion offers spacious rooms with wooden floors. There are seven rooms in the old house and a modern block at the back.

The grand old house has high ceilings and quite individualised rooms. All include attractive silk hangings, are clean and pristine, and have modern bathrooms. Head through the old house and you come to an attractive courtyard garden complete with flowering plants and pungent herbs. Beyond the garden is a newer block that houses a set of identikit rooms that are relatively spartan if comfortable and include all mod cons like air-con and hot water. However, rooms don't come with TV or fridges. Still it's not far to the bar in such a central location and the old couple running the place are warm and welcoming to all their guests. 'Make your choice and you will not be disappointed,' they promise.

Make a pilgrimage up the slopes of Phu Si Hill, a mere 328 stairs above the old town of Luang Prabang. Wat Phu Si, the golden temple on its summit, is visible from all over town. Better still, almost all of town is visible from up here, including the mighty Mekong and the winding course of the Nam Khan.
