Laos - Vientiane - Where to sleep -  Viengthong Guest House

Viengthong Guest House

The Viengthong is a sprawling guesthouse hidden away down a side road near the riverfront. The rooms are smart by guesthouse standards and work was underway to add more during our visit. Regular tourist traffic ensures there is a good buzz about the place.

The original building has some pretty striking murals on the stairway and along the corridors, similar to those found in wats up and down the country. The rooms are small but smart and all include air-con, satellite TV, a fridge, a telephone and hot water in the bathrooms. The cheaper rooms have one large double bed, while the more expensive options include twin beds and a slightly larger bathroom. A friendly family keeps things ticking over and most members speak pretty good English. Nothing seems to be too much trouble, earning them dix points for service, especially when compared to other guesthouses in town. The garden restaurant was temporarily closed while the expansion was underway, but should be up and running again soon.
